Unseeded Notre Dame Beats #9 Texas In College World Series Opener

The Fighting Irish will play the Sooners this Sunday in Omaha.

The 2022 College World Series began this Friday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeating the #9 Texas Longhorns 7-3 to advance to a Winner’s Bracket showdown versus Oklahoma on Sunday at 7:00pm Eastern.

Notre Dame led from the top of the 1st inning and never relinquished their lead in a relatively drama-less outing against the team that was ranked #1 in the country before the 2022 college baseball regular season began.

The Fighting Irish baseball team (41-15) (16-11 ACC) have enjoyed a stellar collegiate postseason so far.

Two weeks ago, they breezed through the Statesboro Regional with a pair of victories over Texas Tech plus a win against #16 seed Georgia Southern. Last week in Knoxville, Notre Dame upset the #1 ranked Tennessee Volunteers by taking two of three in the Super Regional series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Notre Dame enters Sunday’s matchup having won 6 of their last 7 games.

Unseeded Oklahoma (42-22) (15-9 Big 12) upset #5 Texas A&M Friday afternoon by a score of 13-8 after jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. The Sooners have likewise had an amazing postseason journey through NCAA Division I baseball by outlasting #4 Florida in the Gainesville Regional before winning two out of three against #13 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

The Longhorns and Aggies will play each other in a “Bracket 1” College World Series elimination game on Sunday before Notre Dame goes against Oklahoma.

Day 1 scouting reports from live announcers calling the games from Omaha appear to define clear home run alleys at the corners (335 feet), but a near-impossible long ball proposition for hitters who fly into straight-away center (408 feet at its deepest).

Day 2 action from Omaha on Saturday featured the “Bracket 2” games, as the unseeded Razorbacks of Arkansas established a new Men’s College World Series record via 21 hits in a 17-2 blowout victory over the #2 Stanford Cardinal.

Arkansas starting pitcher Connor Noland was sensational in the Razorbacks’ Round 1 game – going seven and two-thirds innings while allowing only two earned runs.

The #14 Auburn Tigers played SEC West rival Ole Miss in the nightcap, and were dominated by Rebels pitcher Dylan DeLucia – who led Ole Miss to a 5-1 victory with seven and two-thirds pitched.

By the time action concluded on Saturday, all four unseeded teams had advanced through the winner’s bracket.

Ole Miss will face Arkansas in Round 2, while #14 Auburn will take on #2 Stanford in a loser’s bracket elimination game.

If you’re interested in purchasing “Row 1” seats in Columbus this September (for the Fighting Irish’s season opener against the Buckeyes), be prepared to pay over $9,000 at current market rates.

SeatGeek has four tickets selling for $9,277 (each) for the September 3rd game, with “cheap seats” just under $300 apiece.
