The unseeded Fighting Irish took 2 out of 3 from the Volunteers at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, and will play the #9 seeded Texas Longhorns in Round 1 of double-elimination CWS.
Notre Dame is heading to Omaha to compete in the 2022 College World Series!
In the end, it was the bats of Notre Dame that came alive in Games #1 and #3 of the Knoxville Super Regional to upset the top ranked Volunteers in Tennessee.
Game #1: ND 8, TEN 6 Game #2: TEN 12, ND 4 Game #3: ND 7, TEN 3
For the underdog Fighting Irish, the series victory represents one of the greatest feats in the storied baseball program’s history.
For the Volunteers, the loss marks a gut-wrenching end to a season in which Tennessee appeared poised to become one of the greatest college baseball teams ever.
Notre Dame now advances to Omaha and will play Texas this coming weekend in the first round. The Longhorns took Game #3 of the Greenville, North Carolina Super Regional after waiting out an hours-long weather delay..
The 2022 CWS will feature a double-elimination format in which one of the remaining eight teams will enter the championship game undefeated against a single-loss competitor. First pitch is scheduled for Friday, June 17th.
Overachieving Or Peaking At The Right Time?
The Fighting Irish aren’t the only unseeded baseball team destined for Omaha this year. On Sunday, The unseeded Oklahoma Sooners upset #4 Virginia Tech. Then, unseeded Ole Miss swept #11 Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg via two shutout performances, while the unseeded Arkansas Razorbacks likewise swept the #10 North Carolina Tar Heels in two games.
In fact, at least four out of the five unseeded teams who entered the Super Regional leg of the NCAA Division I Baseball Postseason qualified for the 2022 College World Series in Omaha:
Notre Dame upset #1 Tennessee in Knoxville
Oklahoma upset #4 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg
Ole Miss upset #11 Southern Mississippi at Pete Taylor Park
Arkansas upset #10 North Carolina in Chapel Hill
UConn will play Game 3 versus #2 Stanford at Klein Field on Monday
All of these teams will enter the CWS in an effort to prove that they are peaking at the right time as opposed to overachieving versus higher ranked college clubs.
The only CWS Round 1 matchup in which two unseeded teams would possibly face each other is Arkansas against the University of Connecticut (if the Huskies defeat the #2 seeded Cardinal in Monday’s Game 3).
Also of note, the #14 Auburn Tigers are tied 1-1 in their series against the #3 ranked Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis. This means that at least two of the top four seeded college baseball teams have been eliminated from the postseason Super Regionals leading up to the College World Series, with a pair of key Game 3 matchups set for Monday..
So far, the Texas A&M Aggies (seeded #5) are the top ranked team entering the CWS. They are followed by the #9 Texas Longhorns – since both the #6 Florida Gators and #7 Oklahoma State Cowboys were defeated in the Regionals.
