AFC South runner-up will be “on the clock” starting Friday, April 29th, with the #42 and #73 overall NFL Draft picks.
Heading into the 2022 calendar year, the AFC playoff prospects for the Indianapolis Colts appeared bright.
With a record of 9 wins and 6 losses – and led by starting quarterback Carson Wentz – all the Colts needed as of January 1st, 2022, was either:
- A favored win against the Raiders at Lucas Oil Stadium on January 2nd, or
- An even heavily favored victory on the road versus the last place AFC South Jacksonville Jaguars on January 9th in sunny Florida.
The Colts got neither. They lost 23-20 at home to the Raiders on a last-second field goal, then waited until the fourth quarter to score their first touchdown against the Jags – in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as its 26-11 outcome would suggest.
In a maneuver reminiscent of the (then) Houston Oilers’ 2nd Half performance in the 1992 AFC Wildcard game against a relatively unknown second-stringer, Indianapolis managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory – failing to take advantage of their mid-season surge. And they failed to give Frank Reich his third NFL playoff appearance in four years as head coach.
Roughly four months later, Carson Wentz now finds himself as a quarterback for the Washington Commanders – and the Colts now possess two “Day 2” NFL Draft picks (plus some Saturday “Day 3” action) as a result of that trade.
In a somewhat ironic twist, the Jaguars were able to secure the #1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft despite spoiling the Colts’ playoff chances, with BetMGM Sportsbook Indiana offering attractive odds on which player will be selected at “number one” this Thursday, April 28th.

17-Game NFL Regular Season Returns In 2022
The complete 2022 NFL regular-season schedule will be revealed by the league on Thursday, May 12th.
As an AFC South team, the Colts will play four intraconference games against AFC West teams (Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, and Raiders), and four interconference games versus NFC East teams (Commanders, Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants). They will play their “17th” interconference matchup against one team from the NFC North (either the Bears, Lions, Packers, or Vikings).
This will be the second year of the NFL Regular Season expansion to 17 games – a format that will endure until at least 2025, thanks to the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement (signed in February 2020).
As one of the few “privileged” NFL teams that have the option to play their home games in a “dome” setting, sports bettors are encouraged to stay informed on the latest NFL Weather Report whenever the Colts are visiting a team that plays outdoors.
