On Tuesday, the state of Indiana released a list of sports that have been approved for wagering.
The list, which includes dozens of leagues or organizations, isn’t necessarily what will be available to bettors in Indiana. The sportsbooks will decide whether there is enough interest from the gambling public to offer action on any particular event.
The Indiana Gaming Commission said in a document made public Tuesday that it’s seeking a “measured approach” for regulating sports wagering. It said it would approve additional leagues or events not on the list on a “case-by-case basis.”
“[It] is the policy of the Commision that sports wagering may only occur on events and leagues which have integrity policies,” said the IGC.
The first brick-and-mortar sportsbooks will be open this fall, with the aim being early September. Thirteen gambling facilities in the state have received temporary authorization to conduct sports betting. The state will eventually allow the launch of online/mobile platforms, which should come sometime next year, though no timeline has been given.
List of approved sports
The state is home to the NCAA’s headquarters, but despite the organization’s wariness of gambling in general, Indiana will allow a wide range of collegiate betting, as long as it’s Division 1.
In addition to the sports that are staples of any sports betting menu, the Indiana books could take action on sports such as darts, bowling, and sailing.
