More potential betting markets are coming to the Hoosier State, home to a nascent retail and online/mobile sports wagering industry.
Late last week, the Indiana Gaming Commission updated its Approved Events for Sports Wagering list. It was the second time the IGC updated the list after first making it public in July.
The IGC updated the list a day after the first two online/mobile sportsbooks (BetRivers and DraftKings) launched their platforms. Other online/mobile books are awaiting the green light.
Aussie Rules Football (the AFL) is a new addition to the list, though its 2019 season concluded in late September. The 2020 season kicks off in early 2020.
Additionally, cycling races under the banner of the Union Cycliste Internationale are also now on the list of approved events. The prominent Tour de France race concluded in late July, but there’s still some cycling left in 2019 (outside of the U.S.) that Indiana books could take action on.
The game of darts was given a boost under the revised IGC list. The original list included the PDC World Darts Championship, which is sponsored by the sportsbook company William Hill. William Hill is the sports betting partner of the Tropicana Casino in Evansville. The 2019 PDC World Darts Championship kicks off in London in mid-December. The updated list includes the separate British Darts Organisation (BDO). The BDO World Darts Championship kicks off in January in the UK.
What is said to be the second largest professional hockey organization in the world, trailing only the U.S.-based NHL, was also added to the list. The 2019 season for the Kontinental Hockey League, which is popular in Europe and Asia (especially Russia), is currently underway.
In addition to the AFL, Australia’s National Rugby League is another new addition. The NRL had its Grand Final on Sunday, so Indiana books were allowed to take bets on the match.
The IGC had already approved the Olympics, but a new addition is official U.S. Ski & Snowboard events. Just a few days before the IGC updated its list, the Utah-based organization announced its schedule for the 2019-20 Race to the Cup Series. The organization also has five events slated for December.
The complete list
The IGC is only approving sports that the industry has an interest in, but it doesn’t mean books will take action on all of the sports/events. Some markets might not draw enough interest, and books may elect to take a pass on some. Some events could be on the board only to be pulled if there’s not enough interest. For example, FOX Bet in New Jersey was taking some action on the IAAF World Championships (track and field), only to take the event off the board before its completion due to an apparent lack of betting interest.
